The best meatball sandwich in Lewes, Delaware

We thought we would share a photo from last weekend at one of our favorite spots, Touch of Italy on 2nd street in Lewes, Delaware.  We think the photo speaks for itself.  Now if you are verrrry hungry, you could try to finish the entire sandwich, but most of the time, half of any sandwich that is ordered here ends up being taken home for later.

Maybe it is the freshly-baked bread, homemade marinara sauce, meatballs and delicious mixture of both muenster and mozzarella cheese, any way you look at it, the sandwich is divine.  Touch of Italy has a total of 20 sandwich varieties ranging from “Mama’s Meatball Parmigiana” (pictured above) to “DaPaulie,” “Don Orazio” and “Rocky Marziano.”  All are made stacked high with ingredients such as capicola, handmade mozzarella, porkette, prosciutto, EVOO, bologna, eggplant, sopressata and much more.  To view the full lineup of sandwich numbers 1-20, click here.

Remember when ordering at the Touch of Italy that most sandwiches (and most anything else) on the menu is made for sharing.  If you didn’t get that message from the photo above, another great example is their calzones.  Below is a photo of the “Verdure Bianche” calzone stuffed with handmade mozzarella, spinach, mushrooms, black olives, roasted red peppers, grated Parmesan cheese, basil and EVOO.  We ordered this for two and it came pre-cut in half for sharing which was great, and boy it was scrumptious!  The crispy crust was baked to perfection and not too thick, just how it should be.

Perhaps the best part of Touch of Italy is the freshly-baked cookies and homemade pastries, we recommend the wedding cookies and mini-eclairs, but we are sure you will find your favorite there.  Plus, they hand-fill cannolis on-site so be sure to stop in for one of those the next time you are in Lewes.

Sometimes the wait to get a table can be long during the peak summer vacation months, so keep in mind you can create your own italian dishes at home from your vacation rental property.  (This is helpful if you have a large group in town too)  Stop by Touch of Italy for all of the ingredients including pasta, sauce, fresh bread, olive oil and desserts and you will have all of the components for a great family dinner.  Their pizza is also superb for takeout if you are heading to the beach!
